Join your host Maura McAndrew for another installment of our monthly cult film seres, Sunday Scaries.
Ths month’s feature is the 2012 Jeff Nchols cult classic MUD.
MUD weaves the Mark Twain-esque story of two teenage boys living precarous lives along the Mississippi River who encounter a mysterious man (Matthew McConaughey) hiding out on an island.
From critic Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post: “As a slippery central figure of Jeff Nichols’s richly observed comng-of-age fable, McConaughey injects a note of danger into a bayou noir story of youthful adventure that manages to be lyrical and sobering at the same time. Aided by extraordinary assured performances from young co-stars Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland, McConaughey defines his own version of a familiar Southern character— the frightening Other who can strangle as easily as save— as an enduring archetype rather than an irritating stereotype.”
As always, Maura will commence the evening with production notes, background stories, and cultural context.
