Artoberfest is Coming!

Artoberfest is a series of spectacular happenings coming to Norman this fall. Brought to you by downtown Norman’s independent art spaces and craft brewers, each event puts creativity and bold expression front and center.

Some happenings are participatory and interactive, welcoming the public to get involved and express their talent. All happenings are a celebration of creativity (in art, music, and brewing!) and a guaranteed fun and fascinating time.

Ink The Block Party | September 19, 1:00 - 8:00 pm | Crawford Ave in front of Opolis

Ink the Block is Norman’s premier art fair. It features live steamroller printing, live mural painting, live music, an art maket, art demonstrations, and more! Sponsored and put on by Oscillator Press, Uncanny Art House, and Opolis, this event draws artists and musicians from around the state. It’s a fun, interactive, and spectacle-filled way to spend a late summer/early fall afternoon.

Brewtoberfest | October 3, 4:00 - 10:00 pm | The Depot

Brewtoberfest is Norman’s annual celebration of craft beer. Sponsored by Lazy Circles, Legally Brewed, and BIG Brewing, it’s an afternoon and evening of beer tasting and appreciation, fun activities, and live music. The OU Print Club will be on hand live printing t-shirts with a mobile relief press. Come out, enjoy some amazing brew, and support local business and art!

Al Paldok Exhibition: RAW | October 9, 6:00 - 9:00 pm | Uncanny Art House

Travelling all the way from Estonia, Al Paldrok will blow your mind with his remarkable mixed media photos featuring images from performances by his travelling performance art collective Non Grata.

Formed by Al Paldrok and featuring members from all continents, Non Grata has been mesmerizing, bewildering, and terrifying audiences around the world for over two decades. Their performances etch themselves permanently into their audiences’ memories and leave them questioning the very stability of the world around them.

Al’s photos capture the insane energy of Non Grata while espousing the underlying philosophies that drive him and the collective itself.

Dennis McNett: Here One Day, Gone the Next | October 9, 7:00 pm (during Art Walk) | 300 Block of Main Street

Sonsored by Resonator and the OU School of Visual Arts, Here One Day and Gone the Next is true community celebration spearheaded by Virginia-based artist Dennis McNett. All mask-makers will be welcome to participate as Dennis leads a ceremonial call to live life to its fullest then leads a live procession of giant hand-made parade puppets, masked revelers, a live drummer, and live guitarist down Main Street.

Mask-Making Workshop | October 5-8, 1:00 - 8:00 pm | Resonator

For those of you who want to participate in Here One Day, Gone the Next.

Learn to make paper maché masks the Dennis McNett way! For a small materials fee, you can make your own tribal animal (or whatever you like) mask to wear while you participate in the Here One Day, Gone the Next live procession during the October Art Walk. Resoantor and Dennis will provide all the materials and tools needed. Participants will shape a carboard frame into the animal of your choice, then use Dennis’ amazing hand-printed patterns to adorn their creations. The results are spectacular! Workshop fee $30 (all materials incuded). Sign up here

Dennis McNett Public Artist’s Talk | October 7, 5:00 | OU SoVA, Room 205

In anticipation of Here One Day, Gone the Next, come check out visting artist Dennis McNett as he takes you through his background as a printmaker, sculptor, and social practice artist. Dennis’ talk will focus on his remarkable artistic journey and highlight many of the interactive public projects he’s done over the past two decades. Q&A will follow.

Metal Shop | October 16, 6:00 | Lazy Circles Brewing

A high energy evening of live music and art making. Start the evening off with a live aluminum pour courtesy of the Sculpture Clubs from OU and ECU. Then head inside where local bands Bugnog and Mushroom Goblin will rock you into orbit as local artists Chris Johnson and Barry Zimmerman create 2-D works that astonish and delight. Lazy Circles will have the taps flowing through the night and the vibes will be off the hook.

Aluminum Scratch Mold Workshop | October 10, 2:00 - 5:00 | Lazy Circles Brewing

For those wanting to participate in the aluminum pour.

Enjoy Happy Hour as you learn to design and carve out your very own aluminum tile! Taught by OU Sculpture Tech extrordinaire Andy Denton, this fun and easy workshop will go through the basics of making a simple scratch mold.

Your mold will then be cast at Metal Shop on October 16 to create a custom aluminum tile for you to keep. Workshop fee $30— sign up here

A Night to Dismember | October 30, 7:00 | Jones Ave in front of The Depot (and other parts downtown)

Halloween for the grown-ups, benefitting the Norman Music Festival.

Calling all zombies! Drag your undead self downtown or get zombified with makeup tips from artists at the Depot. (Pub) Crawl downtown Norman hunting for hidden brains, then bring your rotting self to Jones Street for the Blood Harvest Ball - outdoor live music on Jones Street - Sisteria, King Witch Mother and more playing until the undead drop. Free to the public to attend, $20 wristband purchase (as a donation to NMF) for makeup, perks and door prize drawings for the scavenger hunt.
