This body of work emerges from recurring nightmares and the unsettling realization that imagined experiences can leave wounds as convincing as lived ones. These images are not illustrations of dreams, but manifestations of the fear that remains after they have ended. They occupy the space between memory and invention, where the mind struggles to distinguish what was witnessed from what was only imagined.

I am interested in the psychological weight of events that never occurred—the lingering dread, the false memories, and the quiet anxiety that persists without evidence or explanation. By giving form to these invisible fears, the work explores the unsettling capacity of the mind to construct realities that continue to haunt us long after waking. In these images, terror is not born from what happened, but from the enduring certainty that, somehow, it almost did. — Jonathan Sangster, 2026
