Jonathan Stalling: "Between Languages"

  • 325 E Main Street Norman, OK, 73069 United States (map)

Join us for January Art Walk. We’ll be featuring an exhibition by Jonathan Stalling that chronicles some of his decades of research into Chinese Jueju Poetry, its culture and history, and the extensive projects he has undertaken to translate this ancient tradition into English.

In “Between Languages,” three of Jonathan’s installations, which span the last 15 years (2009-2023) of his work, create a space where English is written in Chinese and Classical Chinese poetry is written in English. Listen to Jonathan’s 2010 opera Ying-ge-li-shi, where English words and sentences emerge from the Chinese libretto performed in Yunnan China in 2010 or take your first steps along the Jueju path by trying your hand at movable wood type printing, interactive online stations, or a book arts table for folding and stab binding books.

Jonathan Stalling lives in Norman Oklahoma with his wife Amy and three children—Isaac (though now in NYC), Eliana, and Rowen and many dogs, rabbits, an 18-year old cat and an eight year old chicken. He’s a Professor of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma. https://www.ou.edu/cis/people/faculty/jonathan-stalling
