Resonator Kids’ Classes are back!
Do you have a child (roughly 8 to 14 years old…) who needs something fun and affordable to do this summer? Well look no further!
We are proud to offer this set of fun, informative and engaging classes just for kids. Each class will be project-oriented and yield some form of fantastic creation. They are taught by working artists and assisted by a group of parent volunteers and art educators. The projects are designed to be educational, fun, and to introduce kids to accessible ideas, materials, and processes that they can build upon in their own time.
Work created at this year’s kid’s classes will be the centerpiece of Resonator’s second Friday exhibition on August 12!

Inner Wild Child (two sessions- June 21 and August 2, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
Led by artist Gentry Leach, these classes will teach the concepts of abstract painting using Norman’s fantastic public parks (Andrews and Lions) as the backdrop and inspiration! For each session, participants will meet at the park and start by taking in everything, noting colors, objects, shapes, critters, plants, etc. They will then take these observations and use them as inspiration for their contributions to a large-scale (4 x 4 ft.) collaborative painting. The emphasis will be on creative freedom— there’s no “bad” or “wrong” mark making in abstraction, so the possibilities are endless!
After class, these paintings will be serve as the centerpieces for a culminating group exhibition/event on August 12 celebrating class participants and the work they have created.

Texture Art (June 28, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
Taught by local artist Denae Smith, this class will show students how to bring their paintings into the third dimension through the skillful use of plaster. They’ll start from a simple drawing, then learn how to mix and apply plaster as part of the painting process. The end result will be work that jumps off the wall!

Improv Quilt Coasters (July 5, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
Taught by local artist and social worker Renee Jonason, this class helps build creative thinking and problem solving while introducing students to the world of quilting. Using the improvisational method, students will learn to create small quilts (coasters and wall hangings) they can use do adorn their world. In one session, the teacher will instruct students how to thread and operate a sewing machine, design an improv quilt project, and assemble the quilt from start to finish to take home.

Screen Printing (July 12, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
This class will be taught by Professor Curtis Jones from the OU School of Visual Arts. It will introduce students to the screen printing process by allowing them to create and print their own images right onto t-shirts, tote bags, pieces of paper, wood, and/or any other flat material we can find hanging around the studio.

Pronto Plate Madness (July 19, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
With pronto plates, kids can take their simple drawings and turn them into handmade prints. That means not just a drawing for mom and dad’s fridge, but one for Grandma and Grandpa’s, one for each of their friends and family, and one to keep for posterity! Come take Pronto Plate Madness with local artist Wesley Kramer, where you'll learn step by step directions on how to develop and process your image using this easy to learn form of lithography. Fun for all ages!

Ceramic Biomimicry (July 26, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
In this class, taught by local artist and educator Alicia Smith, students will look at different creatures that seem to straddle the worlds of plant, insect, and animal. They will examine various animal technologies and adaptations and create their own insects inspired these forms using clay. Students will cultivate their curiosity and try their hand at ceramic hand building techniques as they learn about ecology, evolution, divergent thinking, and the importance of following their own path of inquiry.

Stories on Clay (August 9, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
Join local artist and librarian Katie Pendley for this class that teaches the principles of storytelling via sculpting with clay. After a quick lesson that goes over the seven steps of storytelling and a game that introduces the concept of divergent thought, students will learn to score and slip, roll coils, stamp, paint, wax, and cut clay so that they can translate these stories onto/into ceramic works of art!

Stamp Making (August 16, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)
We’ll round out the summer with a class that’s pure fun! Students will learn the basics of stamp making, one of the most versatile and easy-to-do forms of printmaking there is. The lesson will teach participants to draw, carve, and make small rubber stamps that they can then use to transfer infinite copies of their drawing onto the things around them. Taught by local artist Juan Jaimes, this class will show kids how rubber stamps can be used to augment drawings, watercolors, pre-printed items, and almost anything else they create.
