Queer Automotive Maintenance and Theory - Jonathan Curtin
Queer Automotive Maintenance and Theory - Jonathan Curtin
Course Description: This is an introductory course into the basic fundamentals of automotive maintenance and theory, as told through a queer perspective. The purpose of this course isn't to make you into a professional mechanic. This is more a course to empower those who feel in over their head regarding car care.
Course Activities: The first session will start with a brief introduction by the instructor, then go into automotive maintenance practices. We will cover all the fluids under the hood and how to check them, checking tires and tire pressure, how to change a flat, how to check the battery etc. I will provide tools and my own car for the demonstrations, however students are encouraged to bring their own vehicles as well to better familiarize themselves with their own cars. The session will end with another q&a as far as which repairs the students will like to try the following week. The second session will go more in depth into automotive repair: such things as battery replace, basic voltage checks, and an oil change. This will be more hands on than the first session and students are encouraged to get dirty.
About the Instructor: Jonathan Curtin is a transgender nonbinary mechanic and avid automotive enthusiast. They have just completed the Associates program in applied science for automotive technology at OCCC and hold 5 ASE certifications as well as a state CNG vehicle technician license. They have worked as an automotive service technician for the city of Norman for 5 years now. They also love corgis and old Hondas
